Black Channels quietly released a 3 song EP on 10" swirled dark blue vinyl via Death Waltz records in 2014 called Oracles, which made several top 10 lists. This group is somewhat a mystery, as they emerged from the gloom of Brighton with a genuine darkwave sound that would make any goth enthusiast perk right up, yet have not been heard from since
The title track, 'Oracles' opens with a dark beat that leads into Becky Randall whispering voice. The music twists and lurks in and out of trance dance or experimental marching rhythms, yet keeps it all fluid. Depth of Field is a slow dream sequence that catches you and never lets you escape. Becky's vocal warns "...you're in a place that nobody finds itself cold outside" and the haunting synths and slow ambient distorted drums make for a beautiful listening experience.
The final track is a short instrumental piece that is perfect intro piece to a sinister DJ set... in fact, it will most likely be the opener to my November #Mixtape set. I am yearning to hear more from Black Channels, yet I also fear that the Death Waltz label they were on was sold/merged with Mondo, who really specialize in releasing horror movie soundtracks only, leaving Black Channels on their own. I've reached out to the band to find out what is going on, and if I hear anything I will share the update. -ChrisModem 4/5 Stars
