As the story goes, the greatest entrepreneur rock star of all time, Jack White came up with the idea to manufacture 3-inch records and play them on a special, tiny record player. So a group of Japanese designers called 8-Ball Bandai was supposedly commissioned by Jack White to invent and sell the mini 3-inch turntable called the Triple Inchophone. Orinally, thousands of these babies were to be manufactured, but only around 400 exist. Third Man records also released seven different one-sided 3" records for The White Stripes that I believe were only sold at concerts during their 2005 tour. These 3" records from The White Stripes now are fetching hundreds of dollars on eBay and are considered the rarest of all the Third Man releases. So good luck trying to find the ultra rare Triple Inchophone turntable (see below) and the ultra mega rare White Stripes 3" records.
For the love of Instagram ~
I gave up Facebook about a year ago and switched over to Instragram, posting only my record collection using hashtags #nowspinning, #vinyljunkie, #recordcollector, #vinylporn and #cratedigging. I truly love meeting other die hard record collectors who are also posting their amazing finds, it feels like family but really it is affirmation that I am not alone in this world and that my obsession with collecting vinyl is not in vein.
In my daily feed on Instagram, I find and follow many cool record collectors out there and it brightens my day when they post something I have never ever seen before. A few weeks ago I saw a post from @dj_gmo that caught my attention, where he was showing off his new purchase of his very own Inchophone, purchased on eBay. I was so curious to peer into the mind of this obsessive record collector that I just had to interview them for my blog. Let's hear what Guillermo has to say in this exclusive interview...
Q: How long have you been collecting vinyl?
@dj_gmo: I have been collecting vinyl for 14 years
Q: How did you find out about the inchophone record player?
@dj_gmo: I found out about the inchophone trough an old coworker because he wanted one so bad and would not stop talking about it. So I guess he brainwashed me into researching it and buying one. Haha!
Q: How many 3 - 4 inch records are in your collection now?
@dj_gmo: I have 27 3 inch records
Q: What are the rarest 3" or 4" records out there?
@dj_gmo: The rarest 3" record out there is one from The White Stripes - The Denial Twist
Q: Which records are you looking to add to your collection next?
@dj_gmo: I really want that White Stripes - The Denial Twist
So if anybody out there reading this has it and want to sell it please contact me.
Q: If someone wanted to get the record player or the records, where do you recommend they look?
@dj_gmo: I think eBay is the only place you can find it now and I am sure it is pretty pricey.
Q: What are some other cool or ultra rare records in your collection?
@dj_gmo: A rare one that I have and keep getting direct message offers on it is The White Stripes - Top Special
