Siouxsie & the Banshees formed in the late 1970's if you can believe that. Within a few short years, by 1981 Siouxsie & the Banshees were already promoting their 4th studio album. Siouxsie Sioux was at the peak of her creativity and decided to work on a side project with her drummer Budgie that offered a more raw, tribal sound with minimalist sounds such as a Xylophone lead instrument instead of an electric guitar, and african tribal drums instead of traditional punk throttled drums. The Creatures were formed in 1981, not as a side project, but as Siouxsie Sioux's second full time music project. The early singles, Mad Eyed Screamer and Wild Thing charted in UK and response to their live shows was as favorable as her main project. Things were stellar, if not outlandish and in 1983 their first full length, Feast is released on Polydor records. Six years later in 1989, the second Creatures full length album called Boomerang is released. Both very strong releases, with several singles and club worthy tracks.
Sioux Records is Born
The mid-90's were a tumultuous time for main band, and in 1995 the Siouxsie & the Banshees album The Rapture received low record sales and poor ticket sales during their world tour, causing Geffen records to drop them from the label. I personally love the title song, which clocks in at 11:34 and felt the rest of this album is extremely well written and produced. In 1998, Siouxsie Sioux fomed her own independent record label called Sioux records and the ensuing debut release on that label was the 7" single Sad Cunt, catalogue SIOUX V1.
The Dildo Kid
Always pushing the boundaries, the dark edge of alternative music creeps into the music of The Creatures, which is why I thought it would be cool to share this little known single from back in the day into our October (Halloween themed) issue. The song opens with a dark, distorted guitar that ushers in the new sound, the new awakening of The Creatures. Siouxsie summons up a very sinister vocal performance, spewing "...If you wanna look for Heaven, you're gonna have to die first -- watch your mother or your lover meet the dildo kid." Clearly, this woman is still pissed off at Geffen records for even suggesting that she has lost her edge... the edge is now twice as sharp and slices even deeper into the soul.
Soon after the Sad Cunt single, a 4 song EP called Eraser Cut comes out on CD and limited edition 10" vinyl. The songs on that EP are some of the darkest music I've ever listened to from The Creatures. I originally bought the CD, but now want to track down the limited edition vinyl. There is something dark and etheral about Siouxsie Sioux that will never outdate the music in their catalogue, even 20 years after it was originally released, the evil glint in Siouxsie Sioux's eyes are still there.
I am reminded from this release that Siouxsie Sioux is a very strong willed artist and manages her own destiny with an iron clad will. Even when Geffen label drops her main band, she bounces back by creating her own independent record label, leaving this profound first single as a kick in the nuts to David Geffen. Sioux records continued to release The Creatures music into 2005, when Siouxsie and Budgie separated ways.
