Last year, I started a new job where travel was a major requirement. I was able to travel to multiple cities each month and as an obsessed crate digger, it was the perfect idea to try and find cool record stores to hit while I was in a new city. At first, I relied on the Yelp! app, or from the hotel room I would do a Google search for news articles "The best record stores in X city" to see what the local news was recommending, which gave limited success. While shopping in a Houston, Texas record store I mentioned to the record store clerk that I was looking for the best local vinyl around and he recommended I check out an Android app that should help me out.
The Vinyl District
So I checked out this new phone app called The Vinyl District, which offers several cool features, which include:
This is a regularly updated blog called 'Graded on a Curve' that shares new releases each week and other news about record collecting.
Shares upcoming Record Expo's and related events where many vinyl dealers get together and sell lots of records, perfect for the obsessed crate digger!
Pulls up a list or map view of all the nearest vinyl record stores to your current GPS position. You can also swipe around the map to find other locations and then zoom in on record stores in those cities. This is the best part of the app and works great. I personally used this in at least 15 different cities across the Midwest, South Eastern and North Eastern US and found lots of record stores to hit!
As you visit / check-in to the record stores you hit, you can post comments which then show up on the Social tab. You can check out where others have been and what rare gems they found.
Share info on new record store openings or *sniffle* when record stores are closed down, which we NEVER want to happen!
Be sure to support this great app by downloading and rating max stars!
